Lepcha gumba

This is the monastery of the Lepchas - the original inhabitors of the Darjeeling and Sikkim Hills. They are animists; nature worshippers. Kunchenjunga is highly revered where they believe lies their sacred land where after the soul goes after death to unite with their ancestors.

As time has passed by, races and cultures have intermixed leading this shy tribe no other option but to adapt and adjust in the modern world. Today most are either Christians or Buddhists.
